The Indian diaspora and allies gather in Dublin to stand in resolute solidarity with the millions of students, citizens, and youth movements taking to the streets of New Delhi, and being unlawfully detained from homes, trains, flights, cars, and roads. A democracy cannot survive when citizens are stripped of the very foundation of their constitutional voice: the right to vote.

Across India, public outrage has erupted over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which has led to sweeping, contentious alterations and large-scale deletion of over 130 million names from the electoral rolls. In response, a grassroots coalition led by India’s youth has issued three non-negotiable demands:

  1. Immediate Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, holding leadership accountable for presiding over a process that has fractured public faith in democratic institutions.
  2. Immediate Reversal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), halting arbitrary bureaucratic exercises that disproportionately erase vulnerable communities and dissenters.
  3. Full Restoration of the Electoral Rolls, ensuring every legitimately registered citizen is immediately reinstated before any further elections take place.

Instead of engaging in dialogue, authorities have unleashed unprecedented suppression, preemptively cancelling trains, enforcing sweeping transit shutdowns, and unlawfully detaining protesters and youth organizers to choke the fundamental right to assemble. In an unprecedented state of undeclared emergency, the Ministry of Home Affairs has deployed 23,000 central security force personnel, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF units pulled directly from sensitive zones like Jammu & Kashmir, alongside 12,000 to 20,000 local Delhi Police personnel, while enforcing extensive physical blockades across New Delhi and issuing orders for a nationwide crackdown on protesters of this cause. This is extremely concerning due to recent precedence of extreme police brutality in July 2026 protests at Jantar Mantar, where peaceful student demonstrators were met with extreme police brutality, suffering severe injuries and long-term health complications due to the unauthorized deployment of expired tear gas canisters.

This crackdown is consistent with a long-standing pattern of weaponizing anti-terror laws to incarcerate student activists like Umar Khalid, whose courage was globally recognized right here in Dublin on October 8, 2026, with the Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk award, accepted by his parents on his behalf. We demand an immediate end to the judicial delays used to sustain his six-year imprisonment without trial.

When a state fears its own citizens, the struggle is no longer merely political; it is an urgent fight for human dignity and the democratic soul of a nation. As an international community, we refuse to look away as authoritarian overreach attempts to silence the ballot. We raise our voices from Dublin to echo the cries on the streets of New Delhi: Restore the rolls. Protect the vote. Defend Indian democracy.
